Jalgaon (About this soundpronunciation (help·info) /ˈjæl(ə)ɡɒn/) is a city in western India. The city is located in northern Maharashtra, and serves as the administrative headquarters of the Jalgaon district. Jalgaon is incorporated as a municipal corporation, and in 2011 it had a population of 368,579.[1] Jalgaon is nicknamed "Banana City" as the region contributes approximately two thirds of Maharashtra's banana production.[2]

Demographics


According to the 2011 Indian census, Jalgaon had a population of 368,579. Males constituted 52 percent of the population and females accounted for 48 percent of the population. Jalgaon has an average literacy rate of 76 percent, which is higher than the Indian national average. As of the 2011 census, 13 percent of the population is under six years of age.[3]

Industry


The Jalgaon district contributes 16 percent of India's banana production. Additionally, 66 percent of total banana cultivation in Maharashtra occurs within the Jalgaon district.[4]


The city is served by Jalgaon Junction railway station. The railway connects the region to New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The area also has an airport, which was inaugurated in 2012 by Indian President Pratibha Patil.[5]



Education


A number of notable universities are located in Jalgaon, including North Maharashtra University which was established in 1989, and the Government Polytechnic Jalgaon which was established in 1960. The district is also home to schools and colleges of the "Khandesh Education Society".


In March 2018, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that North Maharashtra University would be named after 19th century poet Bahinabai Chaudhari, who was from Jalgaon.[6]

  • Gandhi Teerth: A modern museum showcasing the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum offers audio guides in English, Hindi and Marathi. The museum is a tourist attraction which houses more than seven thousand physical books written by or about Gandhi.[7]


  • Patnadevi temple: a historic temple in Jalgaon district.


  • Padmalaya temple: one of the only 'Shree Ganapati Peeth' temples located in India
