Starting writing a simulation scenario in Omnet++, INET, Simulte

I'm new in Omnet++ and I'm going to simulate a Device to device (D2D) in LTE network. Although I've searched some and did some tutorials, I'm still confused how use D2D example in Simulte.
I adjusted my configurations in omnetpp.ini and NEDs and channel configuration files.
My question is:
For my simulation, can I just change the codes in the existing codes or should I write my own project and just call them as I need (which seems very complex to me)??
Thanks in advance for any recommendation
Best!
