Dehradun and Haldwani will play hosts to the first edition of Indian version of American WWF-pattern pro-wrestling matches that will witness participation of international fighters from 14 nations, WWF 2007 champion Dalip Singh Rana aka ‘The great Khali’ said on Wednesday.
Khali, who was at chief minister Harish Rawat’s residence in Dehradun, said the Indian version of WWF was an attempt to produce more Indian wrestlers of international repute and popularise the sports in India in a big way.
The Indian version fights will be held under the banner of Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) promoted by Khali, who also runs academy in Punjab to train a select group of wrestlers.
“Yes, this will be the first edition of CWE matches and will be held at newly constructed international class stadiums in Dehradun and Haldwani on February 24 and February 28 respectively.
More than 15 thousand viewers will be able to watch live fights on the two days,” said Khali.
“It will be a great occasion to watch ‘the great Khali’ in action in live CWE fights and Uttarakhand has got a rare opportunity to host the event,”said Rawat.
“Pro-wrestling is very popular sport with Uttarakhand youth, and the first edition will feature fighters from 14 nations, including four women pro-wrestlers. We are confident that it will be a world-class spectacle never witnessed before in Uttarakhand,” said Rawat.
The pro-wrestling matches in both the stadiums will be televised across the world.
“This initiative of Khali will not only create additional excitement and awareness about the sport but also offer them platform to get recognized internationally,” said Rawat.
Khali said he was training more than 150 pro-wrestling aspiring youth at his academy who will regularly feature in the future editions of pro-wrestling championships to be held under the aegis of CWE.
