    As around 18,000 contractual employees of Uttarakhand Purv Sainik Kalyan Nigam Limited (UPNL) went on a four-day strike on Monday across the state, demanding regularization of their job and perks, health services in Haldwani, the gateway to Kumaon and one of the most important cities of the division with six districts, continued to remain severely hit

    NAINITAL: As around 18,000 contractual employees of Uttarakhand Purv Sainik Kalyan Nigam Limited (UPNL) went on a four-day strike on Monday across the state, demanding regularization of their job and perks, health services in Haldwani, the gateway to Kumaon and one of the most important cities of the division with six districts, continued to remain severely hit.
    More than 2,500 UPNL contractual workers are deployed in various sections of the health department across the state. Striking contractual employees of UPNL blamed the state government for boycotting health services as well as other services across the state. They have refused to render services at OPDs, IPDs and ICUs of hospitals.


    In Kumaon, Dr Sushila Tiwari Government Medical College and Hospital, which has more than 700 contractual employees from UPNL, is the worst hit with various services like pathological sampling and examination and others coming to a halt. It is one of the prime medical centres in the region.




    AK Pandey, medical superintendent of the institution, said, “The situation has gone out of hand with so many workers on strike. We are trying to provide alternate services but it is not of much help.”




    The services worst-hit at the hospital are pathological sampling and examination, cleanliness, surgery, medicine and others vital for health of patients admitted. There have been instances when patients have been taken away by their relatives to private medical facilities.




    On the situation of the pathology department, a staff at the hospital, told TOI that only 600 blood samples were collected on Wednesday whereas the collection is more than double on normal week days.
