Early life

Gill was raised in Boorchand, Amritsar, Punjab. He has studied at Khalsa College, Amritsar. He received master's degree in agriculture science.[1] He is an alumnus of Guru Nanak Dev University.[2] During college, he performed Bhangra dance as a support artist for personalities like Sarbjit Cheema. Before starting his singing career, he worked in the Ferozepur Central Cooperative Bank as a Manager.[3]

From the school days to Khalsa College, Amritsar Amrinder Gill and Karaj Gill were in same Bhangra team. And Amrinder was in touch with singer Sarbjit Cheema so he asked him to give them chance to do Bhangra behind him. But for some reasons Cheema's show was cancelled and music producers gave Amrinder a chance to sing. And in fear of being in the college in case the song is not good they decided to give singing credits to their group instead of their names and the group was named as Rhythm Boyz.[4]

Career

He recorded his first song for Jalandhar Doordarshan program Kala Doria. Gill came into the limelight with his breakthrough track "Paigam," followed by such hits such like "Daru," "Madhaania," “Khedan De Din," with Sunidhi Chauhan, and many others like "Mel Kara De" and "Dildarian." His album Judaa was considered one of the most successful Punjabi albums of all time. In 2012, Judaa received a Brit Asia Music Awards for 'best album.[5][6] After the success of Judaa, In mid 2014, Amrinder Gill came up with a sequel Judaa 2.As judaa helped him to earn more success Judaa 2 did the same, Judaa 2 became a super hit in Punjab.[7]

Acting career

He made his acting debut under Punjabi director Manmohan Singh's Punjabi Film Munde UK De in 2009 in a supporting role with Jimmy Shergill and Neeru Bajwa. He followed that up with a lead role in Manmohan Singh's Ik Kudi Punjab Di. His next film Taur mittran Di for Jimmy Shergill productions released in May 2012, it paired him with actress Surveen Chawla and MTV VJ and Bollywood actor Rannvijay Singh. It Opened to a below average response, it had the seventh highest opening day in Punjabi Films.[8] His next movie was Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 which pairs him with Punjabi rapper Honey Singh and actress Mandy Takhar.

After that he was seen in Saadi Love Story that co starred Diljit Dosanjh, Neeru Bajwa and Surveen Chawla and was directed by Dheeraj Rattan who's written several films for of Punjabi Cinema. He then worked in Daddy Cool Munde Fool in the same year for which he was applauded both by critics and masses. His 2014 film Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo also earned him praise. However, his best performance so far, is considered to be Angrej - 2015 which has cemented Amrinder Gill's performance as a terrific actor in the industry. Critics as well as masses have given rave reviews about this film. Also, he won Best Actor Award at PTC Punjabi Film Awards for performance in the film.[9] His releases, Lahoriye (released in 2017) and Love Punjab were also declared blockbusters which further made him the leading star in Pollywood and garnered praise from both critics and audiences. In 2018, his film Ashke was released which based on Bhangra (dance).

It is to be noted that his film Love Punjab had clashed with Gippy Grewal directed Ardaas starring Ammy Virk. It was the first clash between two Punjabi movies and both were hits with this clash it was made clear that Amrinder Gill was the next big star as he defeated not only Gippy Grewal and Ammy Virk but also gave tough competition to Diljit Dosanjh starrer Ambarsariya in overseas and domestic box office. Ambarsariya collections were cut down by 5-10 crores thus proving Amrinder Gill's star power.[10][11]

Thanks to the critical acclaim and commercial success his movies have achieved, Gill is considered one of the best Punjabi actors of the current generation.[12]
