Raspberry Pi 3 Intellij IDEA hangs when OPEN FILE dialog opens

I got a new Raspberry Pi 3 and followed the instructions to install Intellij IDEA (which I've been using for years on other platforms). It will start up and run, however whenever I open the OPEN FILE or IMPORT dialog it freezes and the only way to kill it is to kill the process. Basically ANY OPEN FILE dialog causes it the freeze. I see the following in the logs. I see that "fsnotifier-arm" is part of this trace and there was an older post indicating you needed to update fsnotifier to run on arm but that it was "fixed" in later versions, of which I have the later version that included fsnotifier-arm . Still, that seems to be the problem.
