Uncaught ReferenceError: myappname is not defined at :1:1

0

I've gotten a curious user bug repport for my React app. It only seems to happen for this specific user using this specific computer.

When a user goes to my website myappname.com they are greeted with my custom error dialog. When looking in the Chrome console it says

Uncaught ReferenceError: myappname is not defined
at <anonymous>:1:1

It's very hard to troubleshoot this since I am unable to reproduce this myself.

What I know:

  • The error dialog is triggered by React code, meaning the React app is able load but then fails somewhere.

  • The error dialog is usually set to trigger if some data fetching fails and not handled correctly, and the fetch is rejected.

  • The app is compiled using Webpack 4. There are no variables named myappname in the compiled bundle.

  • myappname is also the name of the domain the app is hosted on.

  • The error dialog is also displayed in Internet Explorer (however I don't know what the console says here).

  • I use a JWT stored in localstorage for authentication during API requests. When a 401 is returned the JWT should be cleared from localstorage and the user directed to the home page.

What's going on here? I have no idea where the code fails, why it does so or where the reference to myappname comes from.

I'll be happy to provide more info if needed, I just don't know what to provide at this moment.
