maintaining the stack for logging when catching an error in a function call

0

I'm trying to log the exact line where an error is raised in python, but I'm only getting the location where the error is logged.

import logging

def main():
log = logging.getLogger()
hdlr = logging.FileHandler(r'C:UserskjainDesktop!exportsbugerrors.log', mode='w')
formatter = logging.Formatter('''%(asctime)sn%(levelname)s: %(filename)s | %(funcName)s | Line: %(lineno)d
%(message)sn''')
hdlr.setFormatter(formatter)
log.addHandler(hdlr)

try:
callDiv()
except Exception as e:
log.error(e)

def callDiv():
raise Exception('My error message')

main()

My output is:

2018-11-15 20:44:54,451

ERROR: ProcessStoryboardProLayouts.py | main | Line: 14

My error message

As you can see, it's logging the error in main on line 14. I'd like for it to log the error in callDiv. Is there a way to do this?

  • The easy way: add exc_info=True to your call to log.error (you'll get the entire stack traceback). If you only want the immediate source of the error, that's trickier: you must extract the failed frame from the traceback. But that's usually less useful anyway.
