Spring + Thymeleaf: Get Model as JSON in Template for JavaScript processing

0

I want to use the model to set variables in my JavaScript code. I've seen questions like this, but they only work with dynamic inline JavaScript. I have my JavaScript code in a static file (/static/js/myscript.js), but I still want to use the model in it.

My idea would be to write JavaScript code that looks like this:

removePerson(model.name, model.sex);

instead of this (for inline JavaScript):

removePerson([[${name}]], [[${sex}]]);

Then, my header on every page would look like this:

<!-- Pass the model to the static JavaScript code -->
<script data-th-inline="javascript">var model = [[#model.toJSON()]]</script>
<script data-th-src="@{/static/js/myscript.js}"></script>

but of course, #model.toJSON() doesn't exist. Is there a built-in feature to get the entire Model and convert it to JSON, so I can access it from the static JavaScript code? The generated code should look like this:

<!-- Pass the model to the static JavaScript code -->
<script data-th-inline="javascript">var model = {"name": "peter", "sex": "m"}</script>
<script data-th-src="@{/static/js/myscript.js}"></script>

Controller

@GetMapping("/test")
public String testGet(Model model)
{
model.addAttribute("name", "peter");
model.addAttribute("sex", "m");
return "test";
}

  • Not as far as I know. On the client there is no notion of the model or request anymore. Only the rendered result. If you want that you would need an additional call to a REST resource exposing the model as JSON.
