2016 Drought[edit]
The year of 2016 has faced the worst rainfall in the last 140 years in Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu the average annual rainfall had gradually decreased 62% in 2016. The Northeast monsoon season had subdued over Tamil Nadu with the worse rainfall ever, just scattering rain in some areas.The highest deficit of normal rainfall in Indian states in 2016 is recorded in Tamil Nadu with 82% deficit.[1] Seeing their crops started to be charred, the farmers started to die of heart attacks and attempting suicides. The Tamil Nadu government requested Rs.40,000 crores relief fund whereas the Central Govt approved a financial assistance of just Rs.2014 crores, which didn't satisfy the needs of the farmers of Tamil Nadu.
Hydro Carbon Project Protest[edit]
The Hydro Carbon extracting project implemented in the agricultural fields of Tamil villages like Neduvasal by the Central government had also annoyed the Tamil farmers. The people of Neduvasal protested [2]
Farmers protest in Delhi[edit]
The Tamil Nadu farmers since being exploited by both the state and central governments, by without providing relief funds to them and not abandoning the cooperative bank loans given to the farmers. This protest was led by Mr. Ayyakannu, a Tamil Farmer. They did some innovative protesting methods like half shaving their beards and hairs, eating the flesh of rats and snake., Taking the bizarreness of their protests up a notch, Tamil Nadu farmers at Jantar Mantar have vowed to consume their urine on April 22 2017. If the Centre still doesn't pay attention, they will eat human feces the next day.On the 22nd day protest, the TN High Court ordered gave judgement for the case filed by Ayyakannu for waiving farmers loan in cooperative banks. The judgement was given according to the wishes of farmers that is to waive all farmers loans in cooperative banks.[3]
