Ive been looking for a way to change a '+' with my htaccess file into '%20'

I found a couple of examples online but it just doesnt seem to work so at this point I am not sure if it's even possible.

Its this url https://example.org/search?q=vrijstelling+BTW&u=&b=0&s=relevance

I need to change the + character in this url to %20 to make it work.

I tried this:
RewriteRule ^search(.*)+(.*)$ search/$1%20$2 [R=301]
and
RewriteRule ^search(.+)+(.+)$ search/$1%20$2 [R=301]

But even if this would work it would only work for two search strings. I dont fully grasp the syntax of the htaccess file so any help here would be really appriciated!
