ProcessBuilder and System.console() on Linux

0

I have a Java app, which I cannot change, and which internally uses System.console() at various points to get user input. I run it by executing an .sh file. I would like to call that .sh file inside a ProcessBuilder and be able to capture the input (and output).

As many people on SO have already stated in many posts, this doesn't seem to work; System.console() throws a NullPointerException. Same thing happens trying to run unit tests from within IDEs apparently. Basically you need to run the Java app from wihtin an interactive shell, which you don't have when you run it from an .sh, inside a ProcessBuilder. I've tried ProcessBuilder.redirectInput(), ProcessBuilder.inheritIO(), nothing works.

It seems that in Windows there is something of a workaround; you can call start and then cmd.exe, and then the Java app. By doing that, you are using an interactive shell, so System.console() is no longer null.

Is there any way to do this on Linux?

Thanks!
