Device Motion Event running even when my phone isn't moving

0

I am working on my first app and the code below is not working as expected and the documentation is a bit sparse.

if(window.DeviceMotionEvent){
window.addEventListener('devicemotion', function(eventData) {
console.log('event listener running');
});

console.log('device motion event triggered');
}

The code above is meant to measure acceleration excluding gravity. The issue is that without moving my phone, the entire if statement runs once and the event listener itself runs repeatedly. If I am understanding the code above correctly, none of it should run unless i move my phone.

Is this by design or is there an issue? If so what can I do to address it? I am running the code in Chrome DevTools which I've remotely connected to a google pixel 1.
