SQL Api Route Query Best Practice
I'm wondering what would be considered best practices in terms of a SQL query for an API call.
For example,
let's say we have a Table named Person
with columns id
, name
, age
.
Let's say we have an api endpoint called /api/persons
that grabs all the information from the Person table by executing a SQL query.
There are two possible queries here:
SELECT * FROM Person;
and
SELECT Person.id, Person.name, Person.age FROM Person
;
Which one would be considered better, or does it really depend on what the use case/scenario is?
If this matters, lets assume this is done on a Node.js backend with Express and MySQL.
Thank you all!
mysql sql node.js api express

The 2nd. Simply because sending less bytes over the network is most of times better. But that's under the assumption that the table has more columns that the API doesn't require.
