Thomas Llewellyn Rhodes died March 7 at the age of 78 after a long illness. Known as "Dusty" he was born in Manhattan, educated at the University of Pennslyvania, receiving his MBA from the Wharton School in 1965. Upon graduation he went to work for McKinney & Co in New York City. Later started his own venture capital firm with Bill Ingram,named Ingram, Rhodes. In 1971 he joined Goldman, Sachs & Company, becoming a partner in 1986. His business career included being Chief Financial Officer of Commercial Union Assurance, LTD in London, England; and in 1992 he joined National Review Magazine in New York as its President where he served until 2009.
His non- business activities included the following:
Founder/Director with Bill Kristol of The Project for the Republican Future
Trustee of The Heritage Foundation, Washington, DC
Chairman of The Empire Foundation for Policy Research, Albany, NY
Founder/Trustee of CHANGE-NY, Albany, NY
Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, New York, NY
Republican Party Economic Advisory Council
Chairman of the Board of the International Rescue Committee
Chairman of the Board of The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, Milwaukee, WI
Collaborated with Richard Gilder on School Choice Scholarships for New York City underprivileged children and the establishment of The Club for Growth, Washington, DC
Collaborated with Ward Connerly in his campaign to end race preferences in higher education
Collaborated with Ron Lauder to establish term limits in New York City.
Worked with Gov. Pataki to establish charter schools in New York state
"Dusty" is known for his sense of humor, his charm, his love of people, his family and his country. He worked tirelessly to make it a better place. He has been referred to as “the champion of freedom and prosperity”
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gleaves, his 3 children Caroline of Hudson, NY, Berkely Arrants, of Houston, Tx and Tom of Austin, TX. And also his 4 grandchildren Tucker and Devin Arrants and William and Nicholas Rhodes.
People who loved "Dusty" and want to celebrate his life are welcome to join his family at the Union League, 38 E. 37th St, NY, NY on March 24th at 11:30 AM.
