IntroductionFootball is the most popular sport in Romania. The Romanian Football Federation (Romanian: Federaţia Română de Fotbal or FRF), a member of UEFA, is the sport's national governing body. Selected articleCFR Cluj is a Romanian professional football club from the city of Cluj-Napoca, Cluj county. The club was founded in 1907 as Kolozsvári Vasutas Sport Club and renamed after the Romanian state railway carrier, Căile Ferate Române in 1918. The club have spent most of their existence in the lower divisions, except for a spell in Divizia A in the 1970s, until they received significant financial backing from Árpád Pászkány in 2002. CFR Cluj returned to the top flight in 2004 and the following season took in their first UEFA competition, the Intertoto Cup, finishing as runners-up. In 2007-08, CFR Cluj were champions of Liga I for the first time in their history, taking the title away from Bucharest for the first time in 17 years, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stages in the process, six years after having been in the third tier of Romanian league football. Selected biographyAnghel Iordănescu (born 4 May 1950 in Iaşi) is a former Romanian football striker, currently a football manager. In 2007 Iordănescu retired from football, and the following February, after his predecessor resigned, he became a member of the Romanian Senate, sitting on the Social Democratic Party benches. On 25 March 2008 he was decorated by the president of România, Traian Băsescu with Ordinul "Meritul Sportiv" — (The Order "The Sportive Merit") class II for his part in winning the 1986 European Cup Final. Iordănescu was a bright striker with a well-developed scoring technique, who scored many goals and helped the teams he played for achieve impressive performances. In Romania he played only for Steaua Bucureşti, a team he joined as a youth in 1962, aged 12. Six years later he made his first appearance in Steaua Bucureşti's first team, followed by his first appearance for Romania in 1971. Selected foreign playersCyril Théréau, pronunciation (help·info), (born April 24, 1983 in Privas, France), is a football striker, currently playing for the Italian club Chievo Verona in the Serie A. He was signed in summer 2010 from Belgian club Charleroi as a striker. Although he is very tall, he has a good shot and is a technical player. Before joining R.S.C. Anderlecht, Théréau played for US Orléans, Angers SCO in France, R. Charleroi S.C. in Belgium and Steaua Bucureşti in Romania. Théréau made a huge step in his career in the summer of 2006. In June, the same year, he was still playing in the France's third division, while in September 2006 he was used as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League match. More . . .
