Diana Memorial Award

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award was established in 1999 by a board chaired by the then Chancellor, Gordon Brown,[1] who felt that the award would reflect the personal interest of Diana, Princess of Wales in supporting the outstanding achievements of young people.[2]

The Diana Award is now a UK-based charity, operating across the United Kingdom and beyond. The organisation is a charity legacy to Diana, Princess of Wales' belief that young people have the power to change the world.[3] Its programmes cover Mentoring,[4] Anti-Bullying[5] and its namesake, the Diana Award.[6]

Purpose and vision

The purpose of the Diana Award[7] is to appreciate and celebrate the work which young people make to society – especially those who are young ambassadors, young leaders, young humanitarians, fund raisers, environmental campaigners, peer mentors, sports leaders, and those who inspire others. The Award is the most prestigious accolade a young person aged 9-25 can receive for their social action or humanitarian work.[6]

The vision is to empowering young people to change the world, promoting a culture that celebrates young people from all sections of society who have made a selfless contribution to society.

Aims

  • Driving change - facilitating change through practical action with young people

  • Recognising change - rewarding positive change made by young people

  • Mobilising change - celebrating and supporting ongoing change in young people

The 20th Anniversary

To mark the 20th Anniversary of the late Princess's death, The Diana Award launched a series of events to commemorate her legacy. These included the creation of a National Kindness Day on 31 March 2017 to commemorate the anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales' death and to encourage other people to carry out an act of kindness.[8]

The charity also held an inaugural Legacy Award Ceremony at St James's Palace, with the support of TRHs The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex to "recognise 20 exceptional young people who’ve created positive social change."[9] The Legacy Award now takes place every two years, celebrating the top 20 Diana Award Holders from that period. All Legacy Award Winners enter a unique development programme where they are supported in growing skills to guide them through their social action work.
