Death Of Medicis CEO's Girlfriend Ruled a Suicide

San Diego area authorities said Friday they have concluded that the July hanging death of the girlfriend of the chief executive of drug maker

Medicis Pharmaceutical
Corp.

was a suicide.

At a news conference, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said Rebecca Zahau, who lived with Medicis CEO Jonah Shacknai in Coronado, Calif., died by suicide, not by homicide. The 32-year-old woman was found July 13 hanging naked from a small bedroom balcony at their home with her feet and hands bound.

Her death was all the more shocking because it happened just two days after Mr. Shacknai's 6-year-old son, Max, suffered fatal injuries in a fall down a set of stairs at the home.

Authorities said Friday that Ms. Zahau was distraught over the son's fall, after learning that his condition was grave. On the morning of July 13, they said she made a decision to take her own life, found rope, bound her own hands and feet, and used a rope and shirt to hang herself over the balcony. Her body was later discovered by Mr. Shacknai's brother.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department posted a video online to show how it would be possible for someone to bind their own hands and feet and then commit suicide by hanging.

Max died on July 16 from his injuries in the fall. Authorities ruled his death an accident.

"Was Max's death a homicide? The answer is no, it was a tragic accident," Sheriff Gore said in a statement posted online. "Was Rebecca's death a homicide? Again, the answer is no, it was a suicide."

In a written statement, Mr. Shacknai said: "While the investigation is over, the emptiness and sadness in our hearts will remain forever. Max was an extraordinarily loving, happy, talented, and special little boy. He brought joy to everyone who knew him, and we will miss him desperately. Rebecca too was a wonderful and unique person who will always have a special place in my heart. Nothing will ever be the same for our families after these losses, but with today's information providing some much needed answers, we will try to rebuild our lives and honor the memories we carry with us."
